Advance : A sum of money paid to you by your agent on behalf of an advertising company that wishes to book you for a job. This is usually paid in advance of your working to secure your services..
Advertising Agency Creates advertising works and campaigns for clients and selects models.
AFTRA : American Federation of Television and Radio Artists is a union for performers that establishes specific fees for different types of performances and protects the model's or actor's rights.
Agency - An establishment that does business on behalf of the model, such as bookings and collecting payment for the model for a specific fee (usually 15-20% of amount collected).
Agent : A person who works for an agency or who has a privately business to book models.
Appointment Book : A calendar or date book used to record bookings, keep a record of your expenses, go-sees or any other business activities.
Art Director : Artist who creates layouts for ads, illustrates model's poses
Assignment : This is the same thing as a booking or modeling job whereby a model is paid for services performed
Audition: This is a trial performance which is given to show the casting directors how well you are qualified for the job.
Backdrop : Background used in a photographer's studio.
Book :To secure
Bookings : Specific job assignments or jobs.
Book Out :When you tell your agency that you are unavailable to work on certain day(s). example: a vacation or another job.
Blow up : Enlargement of photo from a negative or slide.
Call : Appointment
Call Sheet: The notice that goes out to all people involved in a photo shoot which gives the plan and details of the shoot . ( time, the location and how you should appear upon arrival etc.)
Casting : The process of choosing a suitable models for a particular assignments.
Casting Director : A director of a film or modeling assignment who also selects the people and/or models for the job.
Catalog Work :Modeling for photographs which will be used in catalogs produced by a manufacturer or distributor to sell clothing or other items.
Cattle Call: This type of audition where hundreds of models will show up to be viewed by casting directors or photographers. Usually new models are sent by their agents so that they can be introduced.
Character Model A model who is not necessarily a beauty, but who may have strong interesting facial features and selling attributes for specific products. Some jobs require models with an everyday look, such as office clerk, school teacher, cleaning person, and so on. Also called commercial modeling.
Catalogue Photography : Posing for a catalogue assignment.
Checklist :A notebook which is referred to daily where you list all of your "things to do".
Cold Reading : A script that you are reading for the first time in front of the client, without time to memorize the lines
Collection Group of coordinated clothes, shown by a designer
Commercial Model : The "realistic" type. Attractive, not necessarily gorgeous.
Commercial Print Modeling : This refers to models photographed to promote a products on billboards, buses, magazines, newspapers etc.. This type of modeling can be divided into two sections- Fashion Advertising and Product Advertising.
Commission : the sum deducted from a model's earnings by gency for their services, usually around 20% in the U.S. and higher abroad.
Composite Card : A printed card or brochure which contains pictures of a model in a variety of poses, garments, hairstyles and facial expressions and the model's name and physical statistics. Models and agencies use composite cards to market themselves to clients.Also called sed or zed cards.
Commentary: Script used to describe clothes for a fashion show
Convention Modeling Also called trade show modeling.
Day Rate : The fee that a model receives for a single booking that lasts the entire day.
Designer Person who creates the idea for a garment
Designer's Model : A model who works exclusively for a designer.
Dresser Peron who helps models dress at backstage for fashion shows
Editorial Photography : Posing for a fashion assignment. Model will be concerned with feeling and wardrobe. Action posing is used.
Editorial Modeling: This refers to photography for magazines, including covers. Editorial Modeling is similar to High Fashion Modeling, except that the model works for a particular publication and editorial experience opens the door to High Fashion Modeling.
Exhibit Model / Convention Model / Promotional Model : Models who host or hostess for conventions or other promotions. They may hand out brochures, souvenirs or just pose and look pretty/handsome, as an eye catcher for a display.
fads An overdone fashion; passing craze
Fashion Show / Runway Model : A model who models fashions lie in front of an audience.
Fashion Trends Gradual changes in fashion styles
Fees Amount of money per hour
Figure Modeling:Generally considered more artistic work, usually involving some degree of nudity. Figure models work with artists for photography, painting, or sculpture.The focus of the work is usually the body or body parts, and how they interact with light and textures. Also called Illustration Modeling or an Artist’s Model.
Fit Modeling : A model who stands while a fashion is being created by a designer. The model is usually required to have specific measurements. The designer sews the outfit onto the model.
Fitting Trying on clothes to determine fit and style ? usually before a fashion show.
Flat Rate : Fee for a model's services which is negotiated on the basis of a one:time:only payment and which excludes the future payment of royalties or residuals.

Go-see Job interview, model meets a client and shows portfolios
Headsheet : Agency sheet, poster, or book of models they represent that goes to prospective clients
Headshot : 8 x 10 size photo of model's head and shoulders
High Fashion Model : A type of model who can look very sophisticated or unique posing. The models are hired through agencies, and the pay rate is the highest among all modeling jobs.
Hold : agency puts you "on hold" for a job, it means the client is seriously considering you and wants you to keep the time available for them at first
Industrial : Non-broadcast production, often educational or salesdvd, films and tapes
Informal Fashion Show: In stores or restaurants, walk around, no runway. Also called Tea Room Modeling.
Illustrative Model : A model who poses with a product, anything but fashion.

Location: Assignment site outside the studio
Makeup Artist: Applies and changes makeup for photo sessions and runway shows.
Market Week : 4-6 times per year when seasonal clothing lines are shown to buyers
Model Agency :Represents model for employment and receives a percentage of the bookings
Model Bag A large tote in which you carry all your makeup and working essentials
Model Release Written contract in which the model gives permission to use the photos
Monologue -Scene performed by one person for a client that reflects a particular mood and it demonstrates your acting talent.
MUA - Make Up Artist
Open Call Casting when the client sees all models suitable for the type requested. Also refers to a specific day and time of the week when an agency sees new models who do not have an arranged appointment.
Part Models
Hand models Hands should have flawless, smooth skin with evenly shaped nails. The shape of the hands must be perferct. Men’s hands shouldn't be too hairy.
Leg models Smooth, long and shapely legs. Skin should be free of veins, scars, and blemishes.
Feet — Smooth skin tone with evenly shaped toes and nails. Skin should be free of veins, corns, or other foot blemishes.
Shoe — size can range from: size 6-10 for women, and 7-12 for men.
Torso — even skin tone and a well-shaped body for men and women.
Rounds : Calling on prospective clients for photography and television
Photographer Release Written contract signed by the photographer. It gives permission to use the photographs taken during a particular event.
Portfolio A collection of photographs or tear sheets demonstrating a model's abilities in front of the camera. Also called a Book.
Print A photograph printed in newspaper or magazine form
Printwork: Photography taken for catalog and mail order, books, brochures, ads for magazines or newspapers, magazine covers, commercial photography for household products, business products and services.
Producer : Person responsible for the day-to-day decision-making on a production
Promotion Publicity to advance a product, service or person
Proof Intermediate stage of photo development from which you can choose the best poses taken
Plus Size Model : Female 5'8", typically dress sizes 8:14.
Press Showing : A live sowing of the coming season's fashions at an exclusive viewing for the press only.
Print : The pictures that are the final result of the photographer's efforts are called prints.
Release : Every booking represents a contractual agreement between the client and the model. A model release spells out the terms of the agreement and includes the limit to which the photos may be used. It also includes information about royalties, residuals and payment terms.
SAG: Screen Actors Guild, union for TV and film performers
Scale Wage : Minimum wage set by the unions
Scout A person who scouts. To look for prospective models from smaller agencies, other locations, at the mall or on the beach; finding model potential in a crowd.
Sed Card : Card with 3-5 photos of model and their height, eye and hair color and size information to promote and distribute to prospective clients. Postcard-size is most popular. One side contains a head shot, the other side several small photographs together with information about the model. Also called zed or comp cards.
Sign-In Sheet : Lists the order in which each model arrives to audition at cattle calls
Stats : Statistical information of a model, including measurements, size, height, etc.
Storyboard: Artwork that shows each scene of a commercial
Strobe Light unit used by a photographer
Tea Room Modeling : A fashion model who models clothes informally during a luncheon or dinner hour.
Tear Sheets : Pages torn from a magazine, brochure or newspaper of the model. The model "tears" them from the publication to include in their portfolio.
Test Shoot : Some people use the word “Test” to mean the same as “TFP.” They aren’t the same, however, and while models don’t pay anything for TFP work, they often pay some reasonable fee for testing with an experienced and established photographer. Models should be aware that some photographers will expect to be paid something for such work.
TFP : Also you may say :Time For Print / Time For Portfolio /Trade For Prints /Trade For Portfolio. . A common offer from photographers who are looking for talent, but cannot pay them with money. In a TFP shoot, no money changes hands. The model doesn’t get fee, and the photographer doesn' t get fee. Phoographer provid es the model prints and/or digital images ( usually the model gets a CD-R with her image selection burned onto it. All participants are doing the shoot in hopes of getting good quality images for their portfolios, which they can use for self-promotion.
Trunk Showing : A designer's original collection of designs that are shipped to various cities to be shown.
Transparencies: The slide forms of a photograph
Trunk Show : Informal modeling of one specific designer line, usually in a store or small boutique.
U­5, Under-5: In AFTRA contracts, a speaking role having five lines or less.
Usage Additional fees for higher exposure, like a billboard or national use.
Voiceover An actor's voice will be used for another model in a film or commercial work and voice recorded separately in a recording studio and dubbed onto visuals
Voucher : A three copy receipt that a model receives from an agency to have signed at the end of an assignment. A copy goes to the client, to the model and to the agency. The client and the model both sign it to show agreement on hours and fees earned.
Wholesale Model : A model who works for a manufacturer in the wholesale salon where buyers place their orders. The model shows fashions to buyers. This is also done locally when representatives from companies come to a city to show the line to buyers.
